THE EDGE AUDITIONS

Rent
For performers ages 13-20.
Program runs November - early February.

Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Loosely based on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends.  Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general.  How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves, and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.  This is theatre at its best - exuberant, passionate, and joyous in the face of adversity, fear, and intolerance.

CALLBACK AUDITION MATERIAL

Callback Materials

The callback materials above are organized in folders labeled by Character Name.  Simply click the folder with the character's name on it, and you will find all the callback materials for that character within that folder.  Some characters will have 1, 2 or 3 cuts of songs to learn. Since the show is almost completely sung, we will not be asking for any scene-work or monologues.  Within each characters folder, there are PDF's of the lyrics, a Sheet Music Folder (sheet music is marked up accordingly), and a folder labeled "Tracks."  Within the "Tracks" folder, you will find a Vocal Track (to help you to learn the melody) and a Karaoke Track.  Some songs (the Voicemails and "Over the Moon" are sung a cappella in the show and so do not have a karaoke track provided).  Please be prepared to sing the songs with the karaoke tracks, but our Musical Director may want to accompany callbacks for select songs.

While we don't expect callback material to be fully memorized, we do suggest being as familiar/memorized as possible so that you can be physicalizing the character as well as acting the material in your callback. We are looking for fearlessness and boldness in these callbacks, so the more familiar you are, the more direction we can give you.
