The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
For performers ages 13 and up.
Program runs March - Mid-May.

New Schedule-Friendly Rehearsal Process for our Busy Teens!

Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box.

Monday, December 9th @ 4:00pm - 8:00pm
Thursday, December 12th @ 4:00pm - 8:00pm
*Auditioners will be asked to register for 30 minute time-slots.

Saturday, December 14th @ 9:30am - 1:30pm

Character Breakdown
Please prepare music up to 1 minute in length from a similarly styled musical. Please do not sing from the show. An accompanist will be provided.  Please be sure to provide clearly copied and appropriately marked sheet music in the correct key. Lead sheets, chord charts, and/or a-cappella auditions will not be permitted.
Bring a resume (if you have one) and a headshot (a recent photo is fine).

Callback Materials

The callback materials above are organized in folders labeled by Character Name.  Simply click the folder with the character's name on it, and you will find all the callback materials for that character within that folder.  Some characters will have 1 or 2 cuts of songs to learn. In addition, some characters will have 2-3 scenes.  Within each characters folder, there are Scenes/Sides Folder for any scene-work we may ask for at Callbacks, a Sheet Music /Lyrics Folder (sheet music is marked up accordingly), and a folder labeled "Vocal/Karaoke Tracks."  Within that folder, you will find a Vocal Track (to help you to learn the melody) and a Karaoke Track. Please be prepared to sing the songs with the karaoke tracks, but our Musical Director may choose to accompany callbacks for select songs if need-be.

While we don't expect callback material to be fully memorized, we do suggest being as familiar/memorized as possible so that you can be physicalizing the character as well as acting the material in your callback. We are looking for fearlessness and boldness in these callbacks, so the more familiar you are, the more direction we can give you.

1. Recent photo (a snapshot or school photo is fine)
2. Resume or list of training/experience. If you don't have a resume, that's okay! You can just fill out the audition form online when you register or update the information in your account. If you would like to try making up a resume, here are some samples to use as a guide:

Open to performers 13 and up.

No prior training or experience with Random Farms is required and we welcome new-comers, whether they have been performing for 10 years or 10 days. However, since this is an audition-based program, it means that not everyone will be selected, so performers should be prepared for that if they decide to try out.

There will be four casts: A, B, C and D. A performer is only called when his/her role is rehearsing.
Cast member / Parent Orientation meeting: TBD
Rehearsals begin Feb. 29th (Random Farms Studio)

Tech / Dress Rehearsals:
May 4 - May 8 (Casts A and B)
May 11 - May 15 (Casts C and D)

May 8, 9 and 10 (Casts A and B)
May 15, 16 and 17 (Casts C and D)

Rehearsals will be held from late February through mid May.  Each cast will rehearse only once a week, either Saturday or Sunday with the exception of three additional dates. Once the cast list is finalized, a detailed rehearsal schedule will be created based on availability of cast-members.

$820 - Subsidized tuition
$1,366.68  - Actual cost
Did you know Random Farms is a non-profit and tuition only covers 60% of the cost of putting a child through the program?
Our subsidized tuition prices make participating affordable to a more diverse community.
Please consider paying the actual cost, and everything over the subsidized tuition amount will be a tax-deductible donation! This will help support our outreach efforts, which include providing scholarships, discounted tickets, and free performances to those in need.
There is no fee to audition. RFKT is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. In order to cover production costs, programs are tuition based. If cast, there is a $820 (subsidized tuition) or $1,366.68 (actual cost) registration fee to participate in the production. Parent/Legal Guardian is financially responsible for fee if student is cast in a role parent (or performer over age 18) says he/she will accept on the audition form. Cast member is also responsible for providing his/her own shoes, tights/socks and undergarments, as per the costume memo (emailed and/or posted online after rehearsals begin).

A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available. The scholarship application must be submitted at least 1 week before auditions begin; applicants will be notified of scholarship status by December 4th.

Absences are not permitted, unless if pre-approved in writing by Random Farms at the time of auditions. A limited amount of "shadows" or "switches" are permitted if a cast member cannot attend his/her own rehearsal but can instead attend the rehearsal of the alternate cast.  All participants must return all loaned materials (including scripts and costume pieces) in good condition. Participants who do not comply with this participation policy may be removed from the program and their account put On Hold, as described in RFKT's Standard Agreement, until parents, participant and RFKT can reach an agreement moving forward.
